I started my career as a junior salesperson. Over 20 years, I was promoted 8 times. I reached the C-Suite and led a nine-figure business.
Along the way, I learned hard lessons about what truly drives a career forward.
Getting promoted requires setting boundaries. It demands making tough choices every day. The habits that made you successful as a manager will actively prevent you from becoming an executive.
Here are 4 brutal truths about career growth I know at 50, that I wish I knew at 30:

1/ Doing everyone’s work keeps you stuck
The Concept: Being the “go-to person” keeps you exactly where you are. Great leaders build capable teams. They dedicate their time to empowering others.
The Actionable Tool: The Weekly Handover Document one process this week. Find someone on your team and ask: “Who can grow by learning this task?” Delegate it.
Coaching Question: What daily task makes me feel productive, but actually prevents me from doing strategic work?
2/ Saying “yes” to everything stops your growth
The Concept: Smart professionals set boundaries. Your ability to say “no” demonstrates your executive potential and protects your focus.
The Actionable Tool: The 24-Hour Buffer. Review your calendar weekly to identify overcommitments. When asked to take on a new project, learn to say: “Let me check my priorities and get back to you tomorrow.”
Coaching Question: What current project am I doing purely to please someone else, at the expense of my own core goals?
3/ Silence destroys trust
The Concept: Your silence shows acceptance. Act quickly when values are broken. High performers leave environments that tolerate toxic behavior.
The Actionable Tool: The 24-Hour Rule. Address behavioral issues quickly. Pull the person aside and start the uncomfortable conversation: “Let’s talk about what happened in today’s meeting.” Address the action directly and calmly.
Coaching Question: Whose bad behavior am I currently ignoring to avoid an uncomfortable conversation?
4/ You are more than your numbers
The Concept: Companies evaluate your results. You must evaluate your growth. Aim to become a stronger leader, a continuous learner, and a better strategic thinker.
The Actionable Tool: The Wins Folder. Keep a dedicated folder for your personal growth. Save thank-you notes, positive feedback, and lessons learned. Value the skills you acquired during a difficult project as highly as the final KPI.
Coaching Question: If I completely missed my financial target this quarter, what new skills would still make me a more valuable leader?
The Bottom Line
Your career moves forward when you choose action over fear. You must choose boundaries over pleasing everyone. You must choose difficult discussions over easy paths.
These are choices you make every day.
