Years ago, a new leader joined a team I was part of.
He scheduled a 20-minute meeting to introduce himself to me. He spent the entire time talking about his past successes and his resume.
He thought he was impressing me. He wasn’t.
In the corporate world, we are taught to lead with our armor.
We walk into meetings with our titles and our track records. We try to prove how smart we are. We believe our expertise gives us influence.
But nobody cares about your resume.
There is an old saying: “People don’t care what you know until they know that you care.”
If you want to build true influence as a leader (whether in a boardroom, a networking event, or a 1-on-1), you must change your approach.
Here are 5 rules of personal leadership :

1/ Meet Their Hidden Need
The Concept:
We think business is purely rational. It isn’t. After physical survival, a human’s biggest need is psychological validation. People need to feel understood before they can be influenced.
The Actionable Tool: The Validation Pause
Before you push your agenda in your next meeting, validate the other person’s perspective out loud. Make them feel heard first.
Coaching Question: When was the last time I made a colleague feel understood before trying to convince them of my idea?
2/ Focus on Their Pain, Not Your Skills
The Concept: You want to prove your competence. The reality? They do not care about your methods, your frameworks, or your past successes. They only care if you understand their pain and can fix their specific problem.
The Actionable Tool: The Diagnosis Shift
Stop pitching your qualifications. Start diagnosing. In your next conversation, ask: “Where are you struggling the most with this project right now?”
Coaching Question: When looking back at today’s conversations, where was my focus?
3/ Give Value Before You Extract
The Concept: At the business level, networking is often highly transactional. People only reach out when they need a favor, a budget, or a job.
The Actionable Tool: The Unprompted Favor
Build trust by serving for free. Identify one key stakeholder today. Share a resource, make an introduction, or offer help long before you ever ask them for something in return.
Coaching Question: How many relationships in my professional network are based purely on what I can get from them?
4/ Stop Listening to Reply
The Concept: Most leaders do not listen. They just wait for their turn to speak. They use the other person’s talking time to formulate their own counter-argument.
The Actionable Tool: The 3-Second Rule
When someone finishes speaking, count to three in your head before responding. Use this silence to process their world, not yours.
Coaching Question: In your last conversation, if you were listening to understand and not to reply, how would you have acted differently?
5/ Show You Care Before You Lead
The Concept: You cannot influence someone who doubts your intentions. People will resist your advice, no matter how brilliant it is, if they feel you are just using them for your own success.
The Actionable Tool: The Intent Check
Start new professional relationships by asking yourself: “How can I help this person?” Let that intention guide your actions.
Coaching Question: What could I have done differently to show more interest in the other person during my last professional meeting?
The Bottom Line
Your expertise gets you a seat at the table.
Your empathy makes people listen to you.
Lead with care.
