You want to evolve, you are motivated, but you are stuck in the company. In more than 20 years of career in corporate, I have often seen this situation.
My intention is to help you stand out and make a difference.
A new intellectual challenge, developing new skills, meeting interesting people, and traveling are the benefits you will get.
Ah, I almost forgot. Money. It should also be a natural consequence. If not, negotiate…
Unfortunately, many capable employees do not access these benefits.
They miss opportunities because of these three things, fear of risk, conformity, and lack of self-confidence.
The competition is tough and the chances are few, so don’t miss your shot.
Let’s see together how to do it.
3 reasons why even competent and motivated people sometimes get stuck in business?
- Lack of self-confidence. The job is open, but I dare not. I’m not ready yet.
- The search for security. I know what I have but I don’t know what I will get. We often take what we have for granted, but this is a false belief. The company moves very quickly…
- Conformity in the method. I choose a “Corporate” diploma course that gives me credibility. You waste valuable time and miss opportunities when they arise.
Despite these three obstacles, I am firmly convinced it’s feasible for anyone who gives himself the means.
But how to do it?
Accept some risk.
Neither you nor anyone else can guarantee that the new opportunity will work. Yes, you have the risk of failing.
To evolve, you must accept this hypothesis.
Write down the worst-case scenario in your journal. “You’re fired” (business is cruel sometimes) and create your options from there. It will set you free.
If you are comfortable with your worst-case scenario, you will have more courage in your daily actions and this will positively impact your results.
This strategy allowed me to evolve from salesman to chief operating officer in an international group.
Become even more proactive.
Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”― Viktor E. Frankl
I once heard a father on the street say to his little daughter who asked him what was in his work bag, “a bunch of problems”.
Don’t be disappointed, don’t be surprised, learn to love them. The bigger they are, the more you manage to solve them, the more you open doors for evolution.
And at the same time, be proactive in managing your career. When there is an opening, go for it. You will never be completely ready.
I remember a direct report who could highlight the good results of his projects. But even before the team asked him, he presented his significant difficulties and proposed an action plan.
And guess what?
He did the same with his career. His philosophy, enjoy solving problems and doing his best in his job without thinking about the next step. But if an opportunity presented itself, he did not fail to seize it.
He has evolved rapidly.
Learn differently.
So many talented people waste time on this.
Marked by their school experience, they start looking for “Corporate” training to bring them a new degree.
Make no mistake, I am passionate about learning.
But as Seth Godin reminds us, there is a big difference between “Learning” and “Education”.
Education is information given to you. You must master it for the day of the exam.
In learning, you pick up information at your own pace and put it into practice as quickly as possible. We learn by doing. You become the captain of your continuing education.
You’ll go much faster by doing your own “mini MBA” on the subjects you need.
Tim Ferriss shares his experience in the article “How to Create Your Own Real-World MBA” . At one point, he thought of embarking on a prestigious MBA and finally decided to create his own learning program, emphasizing action and experience.
Reading a series of books on the subject, contacting professionals who are already doing the job, taking an online course are effective alternatives.
Conclusion.
Dare more. Being proactive, gaining confidence, and developing your self-taught skills go hand in hand.
Don’t be intimidated. If you really want, go for it.
A career is about 15,000 days of your life, don’t wait until the end to regret.
Have fun
