Michael Hyatt compares work to water. It seeps into every available space. And the advancement of technology helps him.
- “I have a 10-minute wait, I might as well check my email.”
- “Instead of walking 20 minutes, I can reread my presentation.”
- “I’ll finish this analysis tonight, after dinner.”
And without realizing it, drop after drop, work floods your personal life. After a few months of this regime, you no longer have a private life.
And at the same time, study after study has shown that the maximum time of full productivity for a knowledge worker is 6 hours. Those who play sports, have a hobby, and have a complete family life are more productive in the office.
So what if you’ve already turned to the dark side? Put 3 constraints on yourself to start.
- I start at X and not before
- I finish at X and not after.
- I don’t work on weekends.
Constraints are magic. There is no review of my presentation tonight, and there is no overtime this weekend. It forces me to be more efficient in my day. To say “no” more often. To focus on what I must do.
Less is more. Constraints help you be more productive and ultimately happier.
