Triple A: Stay Aligned And Motivated In 2024

January 30, 2024 by Dror Allouche Leave a Comment

I’ve been using goals for over 20 years, both personally and professionally.
And I made every possible mistake.

Not aligned with the big picture, too greedy, too hard on myself, not enough frequency…

Using objectives effectively can help you accelerate your most important projects.

What I’ve learned over the past 20 years…

What SMART lacks. The big picture, the secret to setting goals.

SMART, Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-bound, the best-known acronym for creating goals, is missing (at least) one crucial step.

Our goals must be in line with our big picture.

The simplest exercise I’ve found is Marshall Goldsmith’s Triple-A.

You do it once (30 minutes) and it makes it easier to create your goals year after year.

Aspiration

It’s your ideal ( the life plan, another option for finding it)
A horizon in constant motion, allowing us to look far ahead. Pursuing, not reaching it, is the goal.

Mine “To become the best version of myself and help others achieve their goals. “

Ambitions are your goals

They have a time span. They motivate and help you stay focused (it makes you happy 😀)

Mine in 2024:

  1. From B1 to C1 in German
  2. Professional Certified Coach (PCC): Obtain an additional certification (after Marshall Goldsmith) from the International Coaching Federation (ICF).
  3. OptionsToGrow: Double the income by working a maximum of 6 hours a day.

These 3 objectives also have something in common. They focus on progress. A key to happiness according to Tony Robins.

Working out the why for each goal is the second missing element in the SMART method.

The more good reasons you have in the short and long term, the more likely you are to keep going when the going gets tough. ( to find out more, check : Successful planning: 5 key principles for achieving your goals

Actions

Are the armed wing of your ambitions. It’s what you do every day to achieve your goals.

Mine: 90 minutes blocked in advance with myself (non-negotiable) to get on with my important projects.

Aligning these 3 elements, “Aspiration, Ambitions, Actions,” is finding pleasure and meaning in what we do.

How can I use goals to motivate myself?

Frequency

You remember the year-end goals at work.
We review them just before the assessment. The rest of the time, we forgot about them, drowned in the daily grind.

The solution: frequently review your aspirations and goals

The ideal frequency for me.

  • Daily review -1 min – Reading my aspiration and ambitions for the year
  • Daily action -90 min – Concentration time blocked in my diary to move my projects forward
  • Quarterly review -90 minutes – review the previous quarter. Break down my annual objectives into the coming quarter.

Measurement

The goal has helped me aim high and surpass myself, but once I get to the moment of the result. I’m changing my hat. I no longer look at the goal. I look at my progress.

This simple change of perspective I learned from Dan Sullivan helps me to see the glass as half full. The opposite is a source of demotivation.

Conclusion

Every year, every quarter, I find small adjustments that help me gain clarity and speed up my important projects. This continuous improvement process has helped me over the last 20 years achieve many of my dreams and will continue to do so over the next 20.

“It’s not the destination, it’s the journey” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

What about you? How can you use goals to speed up your important projects while enjoying the journey?
