I’m a systems fan. What is a system to me?
An action that I repeat every day without even asking myself the question.
I do it for my morning routine, 7 minutes of sport, 15 min of language learning, 15 min of chess.
But the systems won’t make me go out for 21 km on a Saturday morning in bad weather.
But who then?
The goals.
We are approaching the new year 2022. And one of our goals is to run a marathon in April. So as is often the case, we find motivation, coaching, and mentoring in books.
And in this case, it’s Bill Pierce and Scott Murr who accompany us with their excellent book “Run Less, Run Faster.” A 16-week program to get ready.
Why do I say excellent? because I’ve done it before😀 . It’s not easy training —21 km for the “ long-run” first week. But if you do the workout right, you’ll get to the marathon in great shape. And that’s our ambition.
So should I use systems or goals?
There is sometimes a kind of battle on the subject on the web.
But why fight over who is better. Both have their place with different purposes.
The systems help me to last. I’ve been doing them for 7 years, and they have changed my life. “A little bit every day” helps a lot.
Goals allow me to spice up the systems and add extra motivation for a period of time.
The two are complementary.
Oh yes, that’s right. We’re getting to the point where everyone is creating their own for 2022. You don’t need to shoot for a marathon. I don’t even recommend it unless you’re already a solid runner. But you can go for one of your dreams. Start small but start. So ready to try?
