And here is the next part of the series “10 principles that helped me achieve my dreams…(and may help you achieve yours)”
For those who missed the big picture, here is the link 🙂
Today, we’re delving into the eighth principle: overcoming problems and making our dreams come true.
***
Ambitious people who want to succeed while enjoying what’s important in their lives face problems. And that’s normal 🙂.
“The problem is not that there are problems. The problem is expecting otherwise and thinking that having problems is a problem.” – Theodore Rubin
And when these difficulties arise, we tend (myself included) to lose clarity and confidence.
Not a good place to continue developing your project.
What most people do:
- They let the problems go round and round in their heads.
- They tell the first person they meet about it.
- They abandon their plans.
It doesn’t work and even creates other problems:
The little negative voice in our head is a source of anxiety and stress.
Tell the first person you meet…
“Oh yes, that’s already happened to me (He tells you his story), and here’s what I did (and offers you his glasses).”
He thinks he’s doing right, but his glasses rarely adapt to our eyesight.
The graveyard of good ideas
My theory is that millions of exciting projects don’t go all the way. They join the graveyard of good ideas.
Don’t let yours end up there…
With (a little) discipline and a free tool, you can ensure you don’t give up and multiply your learning by 10.
What am I talking about?
Your journal.
A journal, but why?
- To pose the problems you will encounter
- To vent your frustration without blaming yourself (no one has to put up with your complaints)
- To refocus on what’s important.
- To prepare your day, review it at the end.
- To note down an idea.
- To…
10 reasons why I’ve been writing in my diary every day for 7 years. (which might inspire you)
Every journal is different, so invent your own. Don’t follow any rules.
One of the things many interesting people have in common (famous or not) is that they write in their diaries.
And one must wonder if writing in their diaries hasn’t made them even more interesting. 🙂
A journal: but how do you get started?
That’s one of the questions I’m often asked. And there are no correct answers. The best thing might be to return the question.
How would you like to do it?
Your way will be the right way…
But I can feel you boiling with anticipation. There you go, you’ve just found a good excuse to open your diary and write why 🙂
But if I must take the plunge, here’s what I recommend.
- Do this before you start opening the door to outside distractions (emails, social networks…) The secret to writing in your journal every day.
- Start small. Very small. Open your diary and write one sentence a day.(Atomic Habits)
- Do this for several days in a row.
- Restrain your urge to write more in the first few days. Focus on developing the habit.
- Hook this habit to another. For example, when I have my morning coffee, I open my journal and write a sentence. (Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything by BJ Fogg)
- You start creating your first series… Well done. You feel the pleasure and urge to open your journal. Let go and start writing more and more often.
A journal: but what to put in it?
“You know those people whose lives are transformed by meditation or yoga or something like that? For me, it’s writing in my diary and journals. It’s made all the difference in the world for my learning, reflecting, and peace of mind.” – Derek Sivers
Leonardo Da Vinci took notes, drew, and recorded his observations.
Ben Franklin observed the trials and triumphs he encountered on his journey to improve his character.
Anne Frank used it to overcome an ordeal.
Everyone does what they want with it. A journal is our space of freedom. We can break all the rules.
Many people like to ask questions.
I used these from a Tony Robbins book for a while.
Morning:
- What makes me happy in my current life?
- How does it make me feel?
Evening:
- If I could relive that day, what would I do differently?
- What have I learned today?
To face my fears, I also like these:
- What am I afraid of?
- What would be the worst-case scenario?
- If this scenario came true, what would my options be?
A journal: but how do you get the best out of it?
‘We do not learn from experience…we learn from reflecting on experience.’”-John Dewey
Your journal is a great way to accelerate your learning .
Reread what you’ve written once a month, once a quarter.
When you have a full year. Reread what you wrote a year earlier on the same date. I’m surprised every time 🙂
What have you learned? What’s interesting?
95% of what goes round and round in our heads never happens. And a few months later, we don’t even remember it. Your journal is where you learn from your past and improve your future.
Conclusion
“One of the more effective acts of self-care is also, happily, one of the cheapest” – Hayley Phelan
This “little” meeting with ourselves gives us clarity, courage, and confidence to pursue our projects.
It costs us nothing.
No, that’s not even true.
It costs us a little time, thought, and discipline.
But he brings us so much.
Let’s not deprive ourselves.
How do you plan to use your journal? Write the answer in yours 🙂
