In the first 6 months of the year, I bought 30 books.
5 are currently in reading mode.
Of the 25 books I’ve read, here are the five that have had the biggest impact on me in 2023 at mid-year.
The practising Mind, Sterner, Thomas M.
A message heard everywhere. Live in the moment.
Often, it’s associated with quiet time, meditation where we concentrate to (try to) find the present moment.
But the author demonstrates this in a different context. The day-to-day practice of its activities. Focusing on them brings joy, satisfaction, and even productivity.
I really enjoyed this book.
Focus produces joy. How to create more of it?
Designing your life Bill Burnett, Dave Evans
We all have something to (re)design in our lives.
When you love what you do, how can you improve it?
When you don’t like what you do (anymore), how can you change?
The authors, professional designers, apply design methods to improve or rebuild a life.
A book with very practical ideas for creating (designing) the life you really want.

Dan Sullivan
In 2023, I discovered Dan Sullivan, an entrepreneur-coach who is approaching 80 and still very active. I have a particular affection for people who age well and illustrate their messages. Dan writes one (small) book per quarter. I’ve read a few of them ( 9 ) this year. And 3 in particular stood out for me:
The Dan Sullivan Question
Four questions to understand your big picture.
What’s important?
What to eliminate (dangers)
What to focus on (opportunities)
What I can rely on (strengths).
I use this process with almost all my new customers. And I can tell you, it works. Adopt it and gain clarity.
My plan for living till 156
An original and practical idea for improving our lives.
No one knows when he’ll die. But rather than choosing from the average panel.
The average age of life in a developed country is 80… Most people program their life with this type of date in mind.
Dan chose a much more distant date (156 years) and a bit crazy.
He won’t be around to discuss it with his detractors the day he leaves.
And it allows him to see life in “long”.
Now approaching 80, he plans to write a book every three months for the next 25 years.
And that brings us to the following title, which completes this one…
PS: I was less ambitious than Dan, I’m only aiming for 125 years.
The 25 framework
In today’s fast-paced world, looking ahead 25 years is a way of slowing down time.
25 years = 100 quarters.
This gives us a very distant vision that allows us to dream big, and each quarter we can focus on one aspect of the project. (e.g. Dan’s 100 books)
It gives us the impression of slowing down our time while going very fast on our important projects.
Conclusion
Reading is incredible.
Some books leave a lasting impression on you, and you know it. (like the 5 I just mentioned)
Others mark you without you even knowing it (the 20 others I’ve read)
They all contribute to the person I’m becoming.
What books have made the biggest impression on you in the first 6 months of 2023?
See you next week
