Zélie, my 8-year-old daughter, had to go to the dentist on Monday morning for a cavity check. Her first one.
The day before, as we were returning from a happy family weekend, she began to develop an uncontrolled fear.
The whole family tried to convince and reason with her… Without much success.
Monday morning, before she left, she was still very scared. I took a notebook and asked her to share her concerns with me. She gave me 5 reasons, two of which were rational.
This time I changed my approach, I didn’t try to convince or reason with her. I just read the reasons back to her and asked if there were any others. She got ready and hit the road with her mom.
Strangely, she seemed calmer and more confident than with all my other attempts.
Why am I telling you this?
If you seek to develop yourself, you’re constantly confronting your fears. And if you can’t get past them, you stay in your comfortable playground now, but full of regrets later.
But like Zélie, you can create a virtuous loop, find clarity, confidence, and courage in whatever you do.
The next time you or someone around you is scared, try this:
- Calm: take a sheet of paper, a pen and write down everything that scares you. Don’t try to rationalize. Just write.
- Clarity: writing made it clearer. It’s no longer a broken record, but an accurate visual of what you were so afraid of. I say were, because as you write it, you realize that it’s partly absurd or unreal.
- Confidence: what could be the worst situation? And what options I will have to deal with it.
- Courage: you’re still afraid, but you have gained clarity and confidence. And it gives you the courage to dare…
Oh yes, I forgot.
Zélie returned from the visit with a big smile and a small gift. A very nice stone that the dentist gave her. If I were to rate her from the outside, I would say her confidence level for the day is 10/10.
Imagine all the things you could do, for your career, and your finances, when you are in a state of confidence like this…
Don’t try not to be afraid, it doesn’t work.
Develop the 4Cs and make your projects successful…
