In July 2022, on the way to vacation, I was listening to an audiobook.
I was browsing different resources to learn how to develop a coaching practice.
And boom, I knew I’d just found the book I needed.
**
Back then, the little dots were starting to connect. I was toying with the idea of going into coaching.
In my previous jobs, I enjoyed people and business development. Coaching allowed me to do both. And it fitted perfectly with my passion for reading and writing.
But how do I get started?
I divided my apprenticeship into two parts.
The technical and commercial aspects of coaching.
And once again, books came to my rescue.
I read and reread everything that had anything to do with coaching. It helped me discover the styles that interested me. Choose schools, train, and certify. (technical aspects)
A job I intend to continue over the long run. We never stop learning. It’s an infinite game. (In reference to another book on my to-read list. Finite and Infinite Games – by James Carse 🙂)
The second focus was the business development aspect of a coaching practice.
Put simply: how to find customers.
Every coach’s biggest problem.
I searched and read everything I could find on the subject.
But that’s where the big difference lies.
I chose the book that spoke to me most. And I applied the method. ( I have dozens of examples where a book has literally had a concrete impact on my life)
What can a book do for you?
The Prosperous Coach by Rich Litvin and Steve Chandler
A book written by two coaches with a combined 50 years of experience in the field. And who share their best recipes on a specific subject, how to find new customers.
Rich Litvins explains that in his first year of practice, he earned $4,000. And in its second year, $20,000. Today, he has a thriving 7-figure business.
Reading the book (listening, in my case) helped me avoid his mistakes and save time. It’s priceless.
And that (among other things) is what a book gives you. The author’s experience organized in the clearest possible way.
Even a discussion with the authors wouldn’t have brought me as much. They couldn’t have explained their ideas so clearly. (an exchange after having read the book would be more valuable, because then I could come up with specific questions on certain subjects to be explored).
A book is a product that has been worked on for 9 to 18 months (and often longer). The order has been reviewed to make it easier to understand.

The result of this experiment.
In October 2022, I launched my business.
In July 2023, 12 months after the idea was first mooted. I’ve done over 300 hours of coaching and am approaching a 6-figure half-year in order intake.
We don’t read enough and we read badly
I’ve read over 400 books in the fields of psychology, career, finance, personal development…
But I applied very little of what I read. When I did, I created significant differences in my career, my finances, my relationships…
How to get the best out of books?
- Read a lot: a book offers the best possible return on investment. For just a few dollars, you get access to the thinking of the best experts.
- Read to learn: read several books on the same subject. This will help you find the one you feel most at home with.
- Don’t force yourself to finish if you don’t like it. Fly over the book or stop it. Perhaps you’ll come back to this at another time.
When you find a book that interests you.
- Stay with him for a long time. Read and reread it. Take notes.
- Apply it: test the suggested exercises.
- Create and launch your action plan if it’s an actionable book (like the one I read to launch my business).
To progress, find the books that interest you and implement them.
Next week, I’ll give you a mid-year review of my 2023 readings and share the books I enjoyed the most.
Enjoy your reading.
