We often believe that to get promoted, we need to be the best at “getting things done.”
We optimize. We fix. We deliver.
But there is a ceiling to execution.
At a certain level, being the best problem-solver actually holds you back. It keeps you stuck in the details, optimizing a system that perhaps shouldn’t exist in the first place.
Advancing your career requires a shift: you must stop just advancing the task and start advancing the group.
This means stepping outside conventional thinking. It means having the courage to ask if we are even on the right track.
The more you connect with the big picture, the more meaning you find for yourself and the group, and the more value you create.
Even when you question a strategy that turns out to be correct, you win. You re-motivate the group by reminding them why they are doing it.
We always gain by taking a step back.
Here is the specific difference between how a Manager thinks and how a C-Suite leader thinks:

1/ In a budget meeting:
Manager asks: “How do we deliver this project on time?”
C-Suite asks: “Does this project still matter given where the market is moving?”
One optimizes the plan. The other questions if the plan is still valid.
2/ In a performance review:
Manager asks: “What resources do I need to hit my targets?”
C-Suite asks: “Are we still measuring the right targets?”
One works within the system. The other redesigns the system.
3/ In a customer escalation:
Manager asks: “How do we fix this complaint?”
C-Suite asks: “What pattern are we missing across all complaints?”
One solves the problem. The other prevents the next ten.
4/ In a strategy session:
Manager asks: “What does leadership want us to prioritize?”
C-Suite asks: “Given our position, what should the business prioritize?”
One seeks direction. The other sets direction.
One tool to help you step back and ask the right question.
The “System Check” Tool
Next time the room rushes to fix a problem, disrupt the pattern. Ask a question:
“Let’s pause. How can we fix the system, not just the situation?”
Fixing the situation = Manager mindset (Putting out the fire).
Fixing the system = C-Suite mindset (Preventing the fire).
The Bottom Line
The shift sounds simple. Yet most never make it. They stay stuck optimizing someone else’s plan because they are afraid to question the room.
You can make a different choice. You can stop executing the strategy and start shaping it.
