I Would Have Been Depressed Much Longer If I Hadn’t Had My Journal

April 16, 2024 by Dror Allouche Leave a Comment

I would have been depressed much longer if I hadn't had my journal.
I would have been depressed much longer if I hadn’t had my journal.

This is Zélie, my daughter, less than a week ago.

She chose this photo to invite her friends to celebrate her 10th birthday with her.

With a theme based on gymnastics, her passion.

I would have been depressed much longer if I hadn't had my journal.
I would have been depressed much longer if I hadn’t had my journal.

That’s Zélie today.

Both legs broken after an accident on Saturday at her long-awaited gym camp. (she’s still smiling😀)

A difficult time for our family

For Zélie first

  • She is in pain, especially the first few days.
  • She can’t move.
  • She will not be taking part in the upcoming competitions for which she had prepared so hard.
  • She had to cancel her first music concerts.
  • School and her friends…

Everything she loves stopped in an instant.

For the family around her

  • We feel helpless in the face of her suffering.
  • The logistics. Carrying her, transporting…
  • Our family trip to Vietnam that we’d been planning for a year had to be cancelled…

How my journal helped me regain perspective

Like many parents, seeing my children suffer is one of the hardest things.

When I am not close to Zélie to support her, I sometimes quickly lose my perspective with pointless questions.

  • Why again (two years ago, she already broke her leg skiing)
  • Why her, why now
  • How could I have prevented this…

The journal helps me find clarity

Rereading my diary from two years ago, after Zélie’s skiing accident, I rediscovered my fears and feelings at that difficult time.

And I also read how we got through it as a family and became stronger.

In an instant, I distanced myself from my bad questions, regained perspective and became a better parent.

How to support and help her move forward?

Food, rest, rehabilitation, examples of champions who have returned to their best level after an accident… My wife and I will help her get back in top shape as soon as possible.

Conclusion

I am often asked “What is the point of writing in a journal?”.

Among other things, to reflect better by:

  • Intentionally learning from our experiences.
  • Gaining distance
  • Imagining our desired future instead of a non-negotiable past

And you, how could you use your journal to try to improve yourself?
