I recently passed the 1000 day streak mark in LingQ. You’re wondering what is what is LingQ?
It’s a platform that helps you learn languages.
It allows you to choose written and/or video content and work on it by listening and reading. The software locates the words you don’t know. Each time you “LingQ” the words, they change to a different color.
I particularly like the philosophy behind the platform. It comes from its founder, Steve Kaufmann a polyglot who speaks more than 20 languages. I read his book “The Way of the Linguist” and was captivated.
The site is based on his method. Content, content, content in active and passive mode. Tackle grammar at the moment you encounter difficulties and not before.
I have been practicing this philosophy for a few years and it has helped me a lot in learning English, German and Italian.
The streak for me is more a way to last. A little bit every day is better than nothing, especially when I am in a phase of maintenance mode. This is my case with German right now.
But here is the problem and my solution
One of my difficulties with routines is that I tend to stop when I start to get bored.
So what I do now, at the first sign of trouble, I innovate and change. Not completely. I don’t stop my streak with Lingq but I change the method.
Let me give you an example.
It will be clearer. For the last 3 months, I have been doing a lesson on “2021 Tagesschau”(German news) but lately I’ve got bored. I was curious in the COVID part, but I was less interested in German national politics.
So while scanning the flow of content in the platform, I found “Der Biograph” short 7-minute stories with a lot of vocabulary for my level and videos.
I start by watching the video and then work on the text. No more than 15 minutes a day. And I like it for now, because in a few days, weeks, months, I will start to feel the lassitude. 😀
That’s when it’s important to change.
How do you keep your streak going?
