I recently read in The E-Myth Revisited by Michael E. Gerber this passage.
Contrary to popular belief, my experience has shown me that the people who are exceptionally good in business aren’t so because of what they know but because of their insatiable need to know more”
And it interested me.
It doesn’t matter what you know. If you have the mindset of always looking for more, almost any door will open for you. And this is true in business and all other activities.
More than your knowledge, it’s your willingness to constantly learn that makes the difference.
And today, there is a highway of options for reading and learning digitally.
Internet, books, online training, vlogs, articles….
But that’s also what makes it more difficult. 🙂
There are so many possible clicks. And not every click has the same value.
Some will guide you to more curiosity on the endless path of learning, while others will take up your precious time and leave you with a drained and frustrated brain.
No one is immune and we are more or less successful depending on the day. But small organizational changes can make a big difference.
My experience with reading Digitally.
Before:
I used to read articles on the internet when I had free time. Each one would lead me to another one. When I found an enjoyable one, I would store it on Evernote. But I rarely did anything with it. And most of the time, I’ll follow my browser recommendation which is a great way to lose time.
Now:
I use Instapaper & Readwise. If I’m looking for a topic, I collect all the articles I’m interested in with one click and store them on Instapaper. If I come across an interesting article but I’m on something else, I don’t stop. I just click and save it to Instapaper.
I read the articles I’ve decided to read. And most importantly, I actively read them. When something intrigues me I highlight it and make a note in Instapaper directly.
My records are automatically exported from Instapaper to Readwise. Readwise formats and exports my data to Evernote.
I only find on Evernote what I am interested in with the original reference.
This is the case for this note extracted from Michael E. Gerber’s book. The process is the same with a Kindle => Readwise=> Readwise to Evernote.
Conclusion
I use both tools but everyone can find his method. The important thing is to be intentional in using our browsers, tablets and phones.
We can grow by learning or losing by getting frustrated. And all this with a click.
It’s up to us to choose the right-click.
