We often hear that fear is what limits us the most.
And most of our fears are not related to our physical integrity. Rather, it’s our mental fears, mostly imaginary, that freeze us.
Our brain has this superpower. It tries to overprotect us. As a result, we usually don’t dare to ask a question for fear of looking like an idiot. We don’t launch a project that is close to our hearts for fear of failing. We don’t take the chance when a new opportunity arises at work…
We indeed grow up in a society that tries to reduce risks to zero. Insurance is an example of this. Our cocoon is comfortable.
But controlled risk-taking, stepping out of our comfort zone, is key to success. In sport, learning, business, relationships, those who dare more make the difference.
So create moments where you practice daring. It doesn’t have to be a significant risk.
“You must do things you cannot do. It strengthens character, builds courage and strength, confidence and belief.”
—Eleanor Roosevelt
My son, who is 11 years old, wanted to test himself by jumping from a height of 5 meters or more. Kids have this innate ability to try. An aptitude that we tend to lose as adults.
We found a pool with diving boards from 1 meter to 7.5 meters.
Trial after trial, we overcame our fears and took the plunge. It was a controlled risk.
Of course, we were scared. Jumping from 7.5 meters was not easy. Especially for me 😀 .
But the feeling of having done it is unique. It’s a confidence booster.
You don’t have to jump off a 7.5-meters platform. Although I recommend it 😀 .
You can just challenge yourself to talk to a stranger on the street or on the train. You can decide to turn the water in your shower to the coldest setting…
Your imagination only limits you. And these small risks you take in your daily life build your character. They lead you to try, to dare more in your personal and professional life.
The average life span in developed countries is 30,000 days. Live intensely. Live each day to the fullest. Turn your fears into opportunities and move forward.
So get ready for the big jump…
