I lied…
I’m not proud of it, but I had no choice at the time.
I was cutting my sports career short due to an injury, and I wanted to return to one of my childhood dreams.
To become a businessman.
The problem?
I had no degree and no experience. I knew right away, I couldn’t sell myself on a resume.
My only chance. Meet people.
So my next move was a Business Career Fair in Paris.
Oh, oh….(another problem)
After several rejections, I finally understand. The role of the first person is to sort out the applicants. No diploma, no exchange with the recruiter.
At the next booth, I go for it, I have nothing to lose. I answer yes to all the selection questions. I’m now a graduate of a business school.
Wow, it works. I arrive in front of the recruiter.
And the first thing I say:
“Hello, I just lied to the person screening the applicants. I don’t have the required degree, but I have no doubt I can quickly become one of your best salesmen. (pause)
I will accept if you ask me to leave, but I am convinced that we have a common interest in doing this interview. “
At the end of the day, I was invited to five hiring events and got four job offers.
I chose one of them. Started as a sales, was promoted eight times in 20 years, went back to school, and ended up as COO of a 100+million euro business.
Why am I telling you this?
Conventions sometimes lock us into boxes. But you are much more than that.
My parents used to tell me, “you can do anything you want if you put your mind to it.”
I believed them.
And you could choose to believe me too.
