How to Find Satisfaction in What We Do (Even if it’s Not Our Passion)

August 12, 2024 by Dror Allouche Leave a Comment

The most common idea (which I often advocate) is to constantly ask ourselves the question: what do I really want?

This allows us to live more intentionally…

But it sometimes traps us:

  • I’ll be happy when…
↳A myth that advertising sells us every day.
    ↳The “when” never ends.
  • The illusion of focus
↳We only focus on the good points of the desired goal.
↳We get depressed when we get there, realizing that there are downsides too.

Illustrated by the talented Jun Han.

Tony Hsieh, founder of Zappos, built a business empire by revolutionizing the way shoes were sold online. He later sold to Amazon for over a billion dollars.

All this without really loving shoes.

His passion: creating unique experiences for his customers and employees.

Shoes were just the tool.

Sales and its submodalities

I worked in sales for several years and often heard colleagues complain.

It’s hard, boring, risky…

And that’s understandable. Who likes to hear 10 “no’s” for one potential “yes”?

Me

Why?

I became passionate about communication, psychology, negotiation, listening… (the submodalities of sales).

Of course, it wasn’t always easy, but the learning and daily practice gave me incredible energy.

And my career was then built on these skills learned during that time.

6 techniques for finding satisfaction in what we do (even if it’s not our passion)

  1. Analyze what you do.
  2. Break it down into sub-modalities.
See James Altucher ‘s concept of “Mini Competencies”.
  3. Find what excites you.
  4. Focus on that.
  5. Delegate the rest whenever possible.
See Dan Sullivan’s “ABC model” concept.
  6. Intention and control
↳Prepare your weeks in advance, making sure to create room for the activities you enjoy most.
↳Review your schedule at the end of the day/week to reflect on what worked well and what you can improve.

Learning to love what you do is also one of the surest ways to get that next dream job. See how here…

Conclusion

It’s not always necessary to change to do what we love. Sometimes, it’s right in front of us.

There’s always more than one path to reach our goals.
