If it’s not a straight “Yes”, it’s a “No”.
I’ve read that Charlie Munger takes 5 seconds to decide, leading him to say “No” 90% of the time. And yet, he doesn’t seem to have missed much.
“If you say ‘No’ ninety percent of the time, you’re not missing much in the world.”
—Charlie Munger
Why such a rule?
Most “Yes” take longer than expected.
We often say “Yes” to something far off in our timeline. The distance makes us think it’s not a big deal.
But have you noticed that the easy “Yes” of a few weeks ago is getting more complex as the date approaches?
But why say “No”?
If you feel like you don’t have enough time to do what you care about, this is an excellent opportunity to test.
- “I’d like to read a book a month but I can’t find the time.”
- “I would like to learn a new language but…”
- “I have an idea for a business but ….”
Say “No” instinctively and more often. And block out that time in your schedule for your project.
You won’t miss much from the outside and will make progress on your desires.
Why don’t you do the test? And I will understand if you say “No” 😀.
