Creativity.
We think it’s going to magically fall in our hands.
That all criteria must be met.
That it is reserved for artists.
But whatever we do, creativity isn’t optional.
I heard Nicolas Dufourcq, Managing Director of the “Banque Publique d’Investissement” (BPI), say on the PAUSE podcast (in French)
“The day you can no longer express your creativity in your mission, it’s time to leave”.
Reflecting on my career, I find that the most enjoyable experiences have been those where I could truly express my creativity.
But how do you develop your creativity? 3 artists reveal their secrets:
Inspiration can be ordered.
In business, there are constraints. Date, budget, resources… We complain about it.
But it’s a great way to use our creativity.
My family recently saw the play Edmond…
Edmond Rostand was out of creativity for 2 years.
Until the day a famous theater director commissions him to deliver a play in two weeks’ time.
The bet seemed impossible. He took it on and wrote at lightning speed. Cyrano de Bergerac was born and became one of the most popular plays in French theater.
Constraints are our allies.
Let’s not complain, let’s use them.
How can I use my constraints as an asset to speed up important projects?
Inspiration is a day-by-day process
Gad Elmaleh, famous French comedian, interviewed by Alexandre Mars, reveals his method for constantly creating.
- “Impulse”: he writes down scenes from everyday life on his phone.
- Transfer everything to one large file
- Eliminates, reorganizes…
- Keep the best to create his next show.
Let’s not wait for the optimal conditions where inspiration is supposed to arrive.
Let’s build it every day by creating a process that captures our good ideas.
How can you capture your daily snippets of inspiration to speed up your essential projects?
Creativity is not a choice
Nathan Sawaya, a former business lawyer who became world-famous for his Lego creations, says:
“Art is not optional”
We don’t need to embark on a career as an artist or spend hours building Lego (though?).
No matter what we do, creativity will help us to :
- Accelerating our major projects
- Finding meaning in what we do
- Set ourselves apart from the competition by highlighting our unique approach
- Taking pleasure in the “Flow” phase and satisfaction with the deliverable
- Finding the child in us
How can I use my creativity more in my current mission?
Develop your infinite potential
Let’s not wait for it to fall on our heads.
That all conditions are met.
That the constraints disappear.
Let’s create inspiration to have fun, stand out, and accelerate our most important projects.
