Being too good at your job can be a trap.
(And how to get out of this situation)
If you want to move up, do more than just your job.
When you excel at your job, you become:
- A convenient solution for a (bad) boss.
- He will do anything to keep you, even if it hurts the company.
But you have options to change that.
Here’s how:

11 ways to get out of this situation
1. Work on cross-functional projects.
You’ll become more visible to multiple stakeholders.
They will eventually compete for you.
Actionable point:
Volunteer for a project that involves collaborating with a department you haven’t worked with before. Even if it’s outside your comfort zone, the experience and exposure will be interesting.
2. Build relationships:
Build genuine relationships. Connect with colleagues, mentors, and leaders in your field, not just for what they can do for you, but for who they are as people. These connections create a support system that will guide you, challenge you, and open doors to opportunities you never imagined.
Actionable point:
Reach out to one person you admire in your industry this week. Invite them for a virtual coffee or a quick chat. You never know where it might lead.
3. Create systems.
Document your processes:
Create clear, step-by-step guides for your key tasks.
It forces you to think critically about your work, often leading to “aha” moments of improved efficiency.
Actionable point:
Pick ONE task you do regularly and create a simple checklist or step-by-step guide. You’ll be surprised how much clarity (and peace of mind) it brings.
Bonus :
Gain in focus when you execute.
Doing so also makes it easier to concentrate.
I wrote this post following the list below.

4. Train those around you.
Make yourself replaceable. It sounds counterintuitive, but you can take on bigger challenges when you empower your team to handle your responsibilities. This not only accelerates your growth.
It also builds deep loyalty and trust within your team.
Actionable point:
Choose one skill you excel at and commit to teaching it to a colleague. You’ll be amazed at its impact on both of your careers.
Create a succession plan:
Identify and train potential successors for your role.
5. Embrace delegation:
Want to escape the “tyranny of the urgent” and focus on what truly matters?
Master the art of delegation. When you trust your team with tasks that don’t require your unique expertise, you unlock time for strategic thinking that drives real impact.
Actionable point:
