I’ve taken over 180 German classes this year, all in pursuit of my main goal for 2024. (Curious? See here for more details.)
I use Lingoda, an online language school offering courses from A1 to C1.
The content is pre-set, but the teacher can change constantly.
I’ve met about sixty of them. With a few exceptions, they’re all good.
And yet, they all have a different way of teaching.
How to help others find their path to success.
We often think:
- That there’s only one way to do things
- Ours is the right way.
With this mindset, we strive to convince others.
Often, even without being asked.
As Marshall Goldsmith says, trying to convince someone who doesn’t want to change is pointless.
And even if they asked for our help. Our method might not suit them.
In The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey tells the story of a man who goes to see his ophthalmologist.
The doctor, after barely listening to him, offers him his glasses. They work for me, they should work for you too.
It’s unlikely to produce results.
Here’s a different (and certainly more effective) approach when someone asks for your help:
- Listen
- Encourage the person to describe their difficulty
- Ask them what they’ve already tried, what they could try
- Help them clarify their plan and take their first action
Coaching (when done well) works wonders.
But it has nothing to do with magic.
It’s just a process of questioning that allows everyone to succeed by finding their own way.
Conclusion.
There are hundreds of ways to succeed.
We can draw inspiration from those that interest us, test, improve, even copy them
But we have to be ourselves in the process.
Oscar Wilde said it brilliantly: “Be yourself, the others are already taken.”
