“I see potential in you.”
Five simple words. Yet, most managers never say them.
This silence is expensive.
Research shows that 69% of employees are not giving their all. As a leader, that means missed innovations, slower growth, and lower profits.
I’ve had about ten bosses in my career. Only two of them truly brought out the best in me.
They had completely different styles. In fact, I liked one much more than the other. But they shared one secret weapon.
In their own way, they told me: “I see your potential.”
That belief didn’t just make me feel good. It inspired me to surpass myself. It helped me create significant wealth for our businesses while accelerating my own career.
Stephen Covey said it best: “Leadership is communicating potential so clearly that people see it in themselves.”
Imagine if your whole team operated at that level. What results would you get?

Here is your playbook to unlock that hidden potential:
1/ Help Them Paint THEIR Future
Motivation evaporates without a clear destination.
- “Imagine 3 years from now…”
- “What’s your ideal role?”
Actionable Tool: The “Future Self” Script.
Ask this type of question in your next 1:1: “If we were sitting here 3 years from today, celebrating your best career year ever, what exactly has happened?” Listen, don’t interrupt.
2/ Remind Them Why They Do It
Daily tasks feel meaningless without a link to personal goals.
- Capture wins on the fly
- Connect daily work to their dreams
Actionable Tool: The “Meaning Bridge” Note.
Every time you capture a win, send a quick note, or share it physically: “I saw how you handled [Task X] this week. That specific skill is what you need to master to reach your goal of becoming a [Target Role].”
3/ Strategic Delegation
Don’t just offload tasks. Assign growth opportunities.
- Match projects to their goals
- Push comfort zones
Actionable Tool: The “Stretch” Pitch.
When delegating a hard task, frame it with by linking what’s in it for THEM” : “I’m giving you this project not because you have free time, but because you need to master [Specific Skill] to be ready for your next promotion.”
4/ Be Their Growth Partner
Blind spots are the invisible ceiling on their potential.
Actionable Tool: The “Behavioral change”. (get help from a coach)
- Ask your talent to choose six stakeholders.
- Interview their stakeholders. What are they doing well, and what could they improve?
- Give feedback to your protégé and let them choose a behavior they want to improve.
- Help them set a measurable goal.
Transforming a behavior that holds them back into a habit that will advance their career is the best gift you can give them.
5/ Fight For Their Future
Great work is useless if the right people don’t know about it.
- Promote their expertise
- Connect them to opportunities
Actionable Tool: The “Sponsor” Spotlight.
In your next leadership meeting, mention your employee’s specific win before you give your department update. “Before I start, I want to highlight how [Name] solved [Problem] this week.
