94%* of people say procrastination has a negative effect on their happiness. Come on…
It’s okay to admit it to yourself. Even the greatest “doers” have tasks they keep putting off.
This is my case.😀
I consider myself productive, but sometimes I really struggle to attack a task that does not interest me at first sight.
Two examples:
The blog you are reading. It was created in English. I decided to translate it into my native language, French. I postpone the task each time, because I have no attraction for the technical aspect of this project.
Or else;
I live abroad. Since I arrived, 9 years ago, I have been using an external service to do my tax return. I don’t like the service and waste time and energy. Every year I tell myself I will learn, figure it out and do it myself.
The problem is that I have no interest in taxes and even less in a language I don’t know well.
I’ve made progress on both projects in the last few weeks, and I see the light at the end of the tunnel.
4 surprising things I’ve (re)learned.
1. Start small:Take one tiny action and start it. What do you risk? Nothing. Either it gives you an appetite and you move on to the next ones. Or you stop there and at least you’ve started.
2. Discover hidden pleasures. A project requires a multitude of tasks. Even if you don’t like the overall subject. There will be things you enjoy doing.
I don’t like the technical project around translation. But I enjoy evaluating the different options and reading the experiences of others.
Or I don’t like taxation, but I like to research, learn, exchange with people who can help me.
3. Once you get started, don’t space out your actions too much.
I had started a few months ago ( just do it) the research activities for the blog translation, and I stopped everything. When I recently wanted to start again. It took me a long time to pick up where I left off. When you start, keep going. Even if it’s a little each time. Relearning takes a lot of time.
4. Surf on that feeling of success. You did something you didn’t like to do. You have a strong sense of accomplishment. Use it to tackle another project you’ve been putting off.
And remember.
Start rolling the ball and never let it stop.
Go for it. And accomplish even the projects that paralyze you the most.
