12 Best Business Books to Read for a Career Breakthrough

September 30, 2025 by Dror Allouche Leave a Comment

Books are by far my best learning tool. They don’t cost much. And every book has the potential to create an impact in my life.

I’ve read over 400 books, and these 12 have had influenced my life. That’s not even true. More books have changed me, but often I don’t remember them.

A recent example is my twelfth book on this list. For over a year, I searched an approach to capitalize on my LinkedIn traction. I must have read a dozen books before finding this one.

How will it impact me?

I didn’t achieve my goal of doubling my coaching income again in 2025. This book gives me hope that I can do it in 2026.

And that’s the beauty of books: someone has already done what you’re trying to do. It took them 6 to 24 months (sometimes more) to organize it into a book. And in a few hours, you gain all of their expertise.

One of the books below may change your life. And if it doesn’t, find the one that will.

12 Best Business Books to Read for a Career Breakthrough

1. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey

  • Master proactive leadership over reactive management
  • Create weekly systems that put your priorities first
  • “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”. How it has transformed my life, and why it can change yours.

Tool: The Weekly Compass

  • How to Apply: Block 30 minutes in your calendar for Sunday evening. List your most important roles (e.g., Coach, Parent, Athlete, Self). Under each role, write down the important thing you want to accomplish that week. Schedule these priorities in your calendar before the week begins.
  • Coaching Question: If your calendar is a reflection of your true priorities, what story did it tell last week?

2. Mindset by Carol S. Dweck

  • Transform challenges into growth opportunities
  •  Build resilience that survives any career setback
  • How To Turn A Negative Experience Into A Life Lesson With Dan Sullivan’s Tool

Tool: The Failure Reframe

  • How to Apply: Take a recent setback. Instead of thinking “I failed because…”, write down, “I learned that…” and list three lessons. Then, write, “Next time, I will…” and identify one specific action you’ll take.
  • Coaching Question: What is the one challenge you are currently avoiding, and what would become possible if you saw it as a training ground instead of a test?

3. Essentialism by Greg McKeown

  • Eliminate 80% of tasks that drain your energy
  • Double your impact by doing less, but better
  • Do you want to achieve more? Sleep better.

Tool: The 90% Rule

  • How to Apply: When evaluating a new request or opportunity, ask, “On a scale of 0-100, is this a 90% ‘HELL YEAH!’ for me?” If it’s not a 90 or above, treat it as a zero and politely decline.
  • Coaching Question: What have you said “yes” to recently that should have been a “no,” and what is that decision costing you?

4. The Coaching Habit by Michael Bungay Stanier

  • Ask the 7 questions that unlock any team’s potential
  • Coach in 10 minutes instead of hour-long sessions
  • Unleash Your Team’s Hidden Potential: The Leader-Coach Guide

Tool: The “AWE” Question

  • How to Apply: The next time a team member brings you a problem, resist the urge to give advice. After they explain, simply ask, “And What Else?” and then stay silent. Let them find the answer.
  • Coaching Question: What would happen to your team’s capability if, for one week, you were only allowed to ask questions instead of giving answers?

5. The First 90 Days by Michael D. Watkins

  • Accelerate your impact in any new role
  • Avoid the common traps that derail leaders

Tool: The Early Wins Map

  • How to Apply: Identify three of your most critical stakeholders. Next to each name, write down one “early win” you could deliver for them in the next 30 days that would build momentum and trust.
  • Coaching Question: What is the most important thing you need to learn rather than do in the next 30 days to ensure your success?

6. Accidental Genius by Mark Levy

  • Generate breakthrough ideas in 30 minutes
  • Turn your thoughts into compelling content

Tool: The 15-Minute Idea Dump

  • How to Apply: Pick one problem you’re stuck on. Set a timer for 15 minutes. Start writing about the problem and continue until the timer expires. Do not edit, judge, or censor. The goal is to get the thoughts out of your head and onto the page.
  • Coaching Question: If you gave yourself permission for your first three ideas to be terrible, what might the fourth one be?

7. Building a StoryBrand by Donald Miller

  • Create messages that make customers listen
  • Position your product as the obvious choice

Tool: The Hero’s Problem Statement

  • How to Apply: Describe your product or service in one sentence without mentioning its features. Use this formula: “We help [X – your customer] to overcome [Y – their problem] so they can achieve [Z – their transformation].”
  • Coaching Question: If your customer is the hero of the story, what is the “villain” your product helps them defeat?

8. BE 2.0 by Jim Collins

  • Build systems that outlast any market change
  • Scale without losing what makes you great

Tool: The “Stop Doing” List

  • How to Apply: At your next team meeting, ask this question: “If we were starting this company from scratch today, what is the one thing we are currently doing that we would not start?” This identifies legacy work that drains resources.
  • Coaching Question: What is the one process in your business that is completely dependent on a single person (including you), and what is your plan to systematize it?

9. Scaling Up by Verne Harnish

  • Implement the 4 decisions that drive growth
  • Create meeting rhythms that actually work

Tool: The Daily Huddle

  • How to Apply: Implement a 15-minute standing meeting with your direct reports each day. The agenda is fixed: 1. Good news. 2. Daily metrics. 3. Where are you stuck? The goal is fast communication, not problem-solving.
  • Coaching Question: Does your current meeting schedule create energy and alignment, or does it drain it?

10. Measure What Matters by John Doerr

  • Set goals that motivate (not demoralize)
  • Track progress without micromanaging

Tool: The One-Page OKR Draft

  • How to Apply: Define one ambitious, qualitative Objective for the next 90 days
  • Coaching Question: What is the one ambitious goal you are afraid to commit to on paper, and why?

11. The Sales Acceleration Formula by Mark Roberge

  • Build predictable revenue systems
  • Hire salespeople who consistently deliver

Tool: The One Metric Audit

  • How to Apply: Map out your sales process. For each stage (e.g., Lead Gen, Discovery, Demo, Close), identify the one single metric that defines success for that stage. Track it obsessively.
  • Coaching Question: If you had to double your sales next year with the same number of people, where would your current process break first?

12. Sales Superpowers by Justin Michael & Clark Anthony

  • Build an explosive and predictable sales pipeline
  • Turn LinkedIn into your #1 customer acquisition channel

Tool: The Insight Question Method

  • How to Apply: This is a 3-step process for turning a cold connection into a warm conversation.
    1. Define Your Target: Get crystal clear on your Ideal Customer Profile (ICP)
    2. Craft Your Insight Question: When they accept your connection request, do not pitch. Instead, ask a powerful, open-ended question based on their specific career or accomplishments.
    3. Nurture with Curiosity: Your only goal is to start a genuine conversation. Listen to their response and ask thoughtful follow-up questions. A meeting will become the natural next step once you’ve established relevance and trust.
  • Coaching Question: Instead of asking for 15 minutes of their time, what question could you ask that would earn you 15 minutes of their time?

The Bottom Line

A single book can give you a new map. But even with the best map, the journey is still yours to walk.

Turning these powerful ideas into consistent, daily practice is the hardest part. It’s where most people get stuck. A book can show you the path; a coach walks it with you, ensuring you don’t just understand the concepts but actually embody them.

If you’re ready to turn the insights from your reading into measurable results in your career, the next step is a conversation.

Let’s have a 15-minute call to explore how you can accelerate your breakthrough.
